FIRST THINGS FIRST

Decision has been made to MOVE forward !

Looking for a new home is both exciting and time-consuming.  First, make a checklist of items to remember while looking for a new home.

On the top of the list, decide what type of neighborhood would be essential for your new home. Will it be the city, rural living, or something that offers both. Location, Location, Location!

Will there be a temporary home? If so, for how long? Is there a cost associated with it?

Looking for a new home is both exciting and time-consuming.  This area will have plenty of ideas to assist with making a checklist of items to remember while looking for a new home.

What’s the offer?

Before going further lets slow down to review the relocation offer documents from the new employer to determine what, if any, of the expenses related to the temporary home is covered in the offer package. Everyone's offer looks different; therefore, some organizations cover a percentage of the monthly cost of living or take care of the entire bill with a cap included. With that being said, at this point, you should know whether or not a relocation specialist will assist you with your relocation.  A relocation specialist is someone whom the company has outsourced as a personal correspondent to help with some aspects of a relocation. From my own experience, a relocation specialist can be of great help but is limited in what he or she can do because of location and professional responsibility. As we continue, you will read of some of the boundaries your relocation specialist may have.

DECISION TO MOVE FORWARD

To stay on track with the location. Determination of the type of permanent residence that will suit your unique lifestyle is essential, i.e., an apartment, house, condo, townhouse, etc.
For your new home, are recreational activities necessary? If so, how close in proximity should it be of your new home? For example, schools, dog parks, yoga studio, gym, mall, parks, outdoor shopping, etc.?
If you have school-age children, the school ratings are essential for the educational success of your children. What areas are within your specified mile radius in the proximity of the workplace? Every school district has an independent school system; therefore, knowing where the county and district lines can make a difference when home searching.
Next, obtaining a realtor in the area of your new home is essential for finding an apartment, house, condo, townhouse, etc. It is a cost worth its price, so be wise in your choices. Your chosen real estate agent should understand your needs and match your personality. Every real estate agent that we have used thus far, I still have a current and ongoing relationship. Take another look at the relocation documents; many companies will cover this expense, but on many different levels.
Let us revisit the topic of an appointed relocation specialist. When relocating via a Fortune 100 company, many but not all will assign a relocation contact person who will assist you will all questions within his or her outline of service. Will there be a relocation team appointed by your organization to help with the move? Although this part can be overwhelming because of the ever so moving parts, one must keep a level head in managing it. More to come on this topic.
Who will be the liaison between movers, relocation representatives, realtors, etc.? Yourself or a significant other?
A question to ask yourself right now is, what is the time allotment between the move and the first day of work?
